Professor Anthony Goldstone, one of the two founders of the UCLH Haematology Service, had a long, prestigious career at UCLH clinically, in research, and as our Medical Director. Tony is also the founder of HCC! Having been awarded the esteemed American Society of Haematology (ASH) Mentoring award, Anthony has chosen to donate his prize to initiate a local mentoring award in the Haematology Department at UCLH.
“I have the great privilege to have won a major Mentoring award from ASH (American Society of Haematology) in respect of the effort I carried out mentoring Haematology trainees at UCLH over many years. Mentoring, unlike coaching, is not task specific & often relates to choices in long term career development.” Tony Goldstone
We encourage UCLH Haematology Staff to nominate someone who has supported them in their career and development, whether formally or informally – watch our YouTube video to find out more!
Nominations are open from the 2nd February to the 31st March 2026. Nominate a mentor now!
The award ceremony for this years Tony Goldstone Mentoring Award will be held in April. Please get in touch to RSVP or for more information.
“I think the most important thing about mentorship is being available, and it’s a joy to see people come on. I’d like to say thank you to my mentors: Sara Stuart-Smith, at King’s, Prof Mufti, and Swee Lay Thein. When I was the clinical lead at the Whittington, Kirsty was a font of advice and support and has been vital to my sanity. But really, it’s the whole team – my haematology children, nursing, and doctors and my patients, who made the job what it is. Thank you all very much, and for my award!” Dr Emma Drasar, Haematology Consultant – Winner 2025
“Mentoring: over the past few years we have had some ups and downs, which many of you will be aware of. The power of kindness, of helping people in need become the best version of themselves is a privilege, and I want to be able to facilitate that for people, so I accept this award thank you Tony and HCC.”!” Dr Andrew Wilson, Haematology Consultant and Clinical Lead for Education, Cancer Division – Winner 2024
“It’s a genuine privilege to win this award… we have a robust induction but it’s about continuing to support people at every stage of their career.” Leigh Wood, Cell Therapy Trials Team Lead – Winner 2022/23
