The work we do is possible thanks to our wonderful community of patients, families, and staff who support our work. Find out more about our dedicated team here!
The HCC Fundraising Team
Sara Goldman, Senior Fundraising Manager.
Sara has worked in fundraising for over 35 years, creating Haematology Cancer Care in 1994, the brainchild of HCC Founder, Professor Anthony (Tony) Goldstone.

“Apart from being able to give back, our supporters would say that HCC is also being part of a like-minded meaningful community, and collectively, patients, relatives and supporters and staff are at the heart of this fund. Our HCC community has raised over six million pounds, positively impacting staff development, patient experience, and research within the haematology service at UCLH. For me personally, the experience of being based within the service, surrounded by incredible staff, seeing our impact here at UCLH every day and being part of its story over the past 31 years, is a privilege.”
Simon Tolhurst, Fundraising and Engagement Officer.
Simon first joined HCC in 2013 as a volunteer, making portrait drawings of patients, as part of a Portrait Artist in Residence project for the charity. The project started as a trial but received fantastic feedback from patients, loved ones, and staff, that meant that the project continued for ten years!

“I hadn’t spent much time in hospital environments before this project, but I was immediately struck by how amazing the clinical staff were in their treatment of the patients, always kind, caring, and willing to go the extra mile to support them. During this time, I attended The Bridgathon and other HCC events as a photographer and was pleased to join HCC as a Fundraising Officer in Jan 2017. This role has given me an ever-deeper appreciation of the work the clinical staff, and other support staff, do to care for their patients. As well as a better understanding of the unique position HCC occupies as a focal point for patients, loved ones, and staff, helping to make UCLH Haematology even stronger.”
Victoria Marshall, Fundraising and Engagement Officer.

“Working for Haematology Cancer Care at UCLH is such a dynamic environment, no two days are the same. It’s great that the charity is able to make a meaningful difference in so many different ways – from something seemingly as small as our snack trolley, to funding life changing research. It’s wonderful working in a small team to support the hospital, and helping to improve Haematology services so directly.”
The Board
The Haematology Cancer Care board is comprised of clinical staff, including UCLH haematology Ward Sisters and Ward Managers, and is chaired by Stephen Rowley, Senior Matron Cancer Services.
Stephen Rowley, Senior Matron Cancer Services & HCC Chair.

“You need a little bit of magic to make a clinical service as good for patients as UCLH Haematology. HCC has been that magic for 30 years, and its influence cannot be underestimated.”
Our patrons and ambassadors
Professor Antony H Goldstone, Founder.

“HCC has brought together an unshakeable bond between patients and staff to everyone’s benefit. Commitment and leadership have led it to an extraordinary place. It is an example of what can be done in some parts of a struggling Health Service. Vision, tenacity & determination have triumphed.”
Professor Emma Morris, Patron & Director, UCL Division of Infection & Immunity; BMT & Immunodeficiency Physician; Professor of Clinical Cell & Gene Therapy.

‘HCC sums up the remarkable sense of belonging that (haematology) patients, families and staff feel at UCH. It knits people together, making them feel they belong to something and want to give something back. It funds fantastic research, staff education, and buys extras which help make patients feel more human and that they matter.’
Julian Rhind-Tutt, Patron.

“HCC provides the resources, equipment, training, care, friendship and the helping hands that transform a patient’s journey. They are the perfect complement to the clinical excellence at UCLH. They help tackle all the unimaginable and unexpected challenges of facing a blood disorder. But above all, they are always there for patients and families. With inspiring leadership and such a caring and welcoming community you know you are never alone; that’s priceless.”
Keya Prasad, Ambassador & Ward Administrator, Haematology, GWB.

“I think I can contribute a lot to HCC by becoming an ambassador. Staff and patients can get in touch with me about anything to do with HCC, and I can chat to them and signpost them to both of you. Stephen the chairman is an amazing person and I get on well with everyone and am happy to be part of this special ‘family’. I love the #haemteam and HCC is my favourite charity! I hope I can make a difference!”
Mel Threader, Ambassador.

“These are the words that spring to mind about what HCC means to me: hope, comfort, and community. Completely coincidentally HCC all over again. These are the things that keep me going in life and the reason I feel committed to give something back.”
Jules Mountain, Ambassador.

“The work that the charity does brings joy to people in despair. Being diagnosed with cancer is a huge shock and terrifying. The sweet trolley and pizza evenings are great examples of bringing a little bit of normality and kindness in the darkest hour. It’s all the wonderful people that give their time to the charity that makes this possible. These are the things that make this charity so special and makes all the difference for the patients – THANK YOU.”
Volunteers
We wouldn’t be able to achieve as much as we do without the support of our brilliant volunteers! Made up of UCLH haematology patients, families, and supporters, they help us with everything from our HCC stands, to manning our London Bridgathon!
Daphne Earl, HCC Volunteer

“In 2007, I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Follicular Lymphoma. HCC became part of my life, it is nice to contribute to a charity where you see things being put into action. Being a part of HCC means a huge amount to me.”
